I’m clear to drink

According to this website – research (from the 1990s) showed that drinking alcohol doesn’t contribute to weight gain, and may even lead to weight loss in women (so drink up ladies).

Sounds counter-intuitive to me, but I’ll take it as a hall-pass to put back another Loose Cannon.

But DOH!  Just read this.  I should have stopped with the previous website.

The main effect of alcohol is to reduce the amount of fat your body burns for energy. Rather than getting stored as fat, the main fate of alcohol is conversion into a substance called acetate.  And it appears this sharp rise in acetate puts the brakes on fat loss.

  1. After watching stick thin Irish carpenters drink 10 – 15 pints of Guinness over a six hour period, along with an order of Fish and Chips, 3 – 4 nights a week, this kind of makes sense. That would be in the neighborhood of 5 to 6 thousand calories in three single meals during a week.
