Civil War
Kim and I went to the Manassas Battlefield on Saturday. I never realized the significance of this site – the first major battle of the civil war in 1861 took place here. It was well worth the trip for the in-depth history lesson we got on the guided tour.

you should read walt whitman’s account of the returning whipped federal soldiers to WDC after the first Manassas battle. he was living in DC at the time and nobody thought the south would take a stand and really fight. picnic’rs headed out that way for the spectacle and eventually soldiers were returning to town busted up and laying exhausted on the steps of some of the buildings we still ride past on some of the same avenues too!
have you heard of the battlefield century? Thurmont, Antietam, Mt. Union, Gettysburg. let’s do it when i get down there.
