Kim and I ventured up to Staten Island for the big Christmas Eve fish sauce throw down. Unfamiliar with this event? Well Christmas Eve is a vigilia di magro – a day of abstinence in the Catholic Church which prohibits eating meat. So…the I-talians pig out on fish. The standard is 7 different kinds if you’re exact. I think we hit 5, but also threw in a roast and plenty of appetizers.
Laura Bernard (Kim’s Mom) was the host this year and in the spirit of culinary competition tried to out-do past CE feasts. I think she was close. We had Alaskan King crab legs to start. Followed by lobster tail. Then came the fish sauce and pasta. The sauce had shrimp, scallops, and mussels.
Dessert was awesome with homemade cookies (I made), homemade cream puffs (Kim) with whipped cream (Laura), more cookies (Laura), chocolates, pies, carrot cake (Laura), and more cookies. I passed out soon after finishing my second cup of coffee. It was a futile attempt to stay awake as the food coma was setting in.
For Christmas, Kim and I spent it driving home and then had left-over CE dinner. Tomorrow its off to see the NC clan and my Mom who is visiting.
Hope everyone had a great xmas and Santa was hopefully pleased with you behavior this past year.
