Friday night excitement

Just downed some homemade tostado pizza – yum! Kim gets home tonight and I can’t wait to see her. Two days – too long. I’ve slept well, but after being together so long there is still a weird feeling waking up without her, and I tend to stay up later doing mindless web surfing. For example, decided to reconnect with my good friends Rush. While reading about Neal Peart, who has a great history of travel, music, writing, etc. – I found this cool link (you’ll need a high speed connection). YZZ kicks ass.

I have a ton of work to do for my PhD stuff. I am starting to shift gears away from the radiative transfer modeling (basically this means we are working on correcting the satellite signal for atmospheric attenuation – for thermal infrared wavelengths this is due primarily to water vapor absorption) and towards investigating the relationship between fire emissions and fire energy. Why? Well if you’re going to talk about climate change one of the variables you need to account for in modelling scenarios is greenhouse gases – and fire is a major source of atmospheric loading of carbon (in the form of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane), aerosols, and other trace gases.

Shifting gears (nice pun) I hope to do some extended rides this weekend. The DC Velo 7am ride is always a nice hammer-fest to start the weekend. Then Sunday a bunch of us are going to hit the MassanuttenSkyline Drive loop in and around Shenandoah National Park and the Shenandoah Valley. Either direction (Mass-Sky or Sky-Mass) it really hurts – 80+ miles with about 10,000 feet of climbing. The weather and suffering should be great. Good prep for the Shenandoah Mountain 100. I may do the Wilderness 101 in PA, but $ is always the issue, especially when entrance fee is $115. Chris at Shenandoah Mountain Touring runs great events, so it is certainly money well spent.
